WWDC Keynote: 3.0 Release Date, iPhone 3GS, Parental Controls

Here are the items of interest to iPhone developers from today’s WWDC keynote. To keep things concise, we’re omitting things that were already announced at the iPhone 3.0 public preview event in March.

iPhone 3.0 Release Date: June 17. Available To Developers Now.

3.0 will be released to the public June 17. Developers can download both the SDK and firmware from immediately from Apple’s iPhone Dev Center.

iPhone 3GS, Compass, $99 iPhone 3G

Apple unveiled a new iPhone model, the iPhone 3GS. Reportedly “up to” twice as fast, features a three axis compass, 3MP camera, video recording, and voice control. Priced at $299/32GB and $199/16GB. The iPhone 3G will continue to be available in an 8GB form for $99.

Parental Controls

Apps will now feature ratings for age-appropriateness and the devices will support parental controls. Rate your apps from iTunes connect. This should eliminate many app-rejections, though apps containing “obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind” are still verboten.

Is the Non Disclosure Agreement over for developers? Can we talk freely about the new features?

@mike: I don’t think so. I think we have to wait until June 17. I have half a dozen 3.0 tutorials that I’ve been readying; I’m sitting on them until then :-(
